baby’s first white russians?

A. found this one in Parenting magazine of all places:

What is Milkscreen?

Milkscreen is a simple, two minute test to detect for alcohol in breast milk.

Why use Milkscreen?

Because all mothers are unique! So, naturally the way our bodies process alcohol is unique, too. Metabolizing alcohol depends on several factors including:

  • Body weight
  • Type of alcohol consumed
  • Food intake

Following generalized guidelines may result in using alcohol-tainted milk, but with Milkscreen Mom can ensure that her breast milk is alcohol free.

We were both kind of like: ???

But hey, if Baby wants a White Russian, right?

ummm…. I’m just imagining alcoholic mamas screening to find out if the alcohol content is below .02, then shrugging and picking up the baby.

I mean hey. A LITTLE of the sauce is good for baby! Makes em sleep.

Though, on an honest note… I had thought of getting something like this for when I finally have the kid and am like… OMG I want a beer! Though more than likely I think I’ll just pump a crazy amount of milk and then have a beer, so I know I have no alcohol tainted milk.

Actually, the part about the metabolism of alcohol depending on many factors isn’t entirely accurate. While it does depend on factors like body weight, availability of liver enzymes (a genetic factor), and the contents of the stomach, the TYPE of alcohol consumed does not differ in its metabolism. Metabolism differs from individual to individual, but the average rate is about 1-1.5 oz. or 12-18 ml of 80-proof alcohol per hour. So whether you are consuming your alcohol in the form of wine, beer, or liquor doesn’t affect the rate of metabolism, although they each contain different concentrations of alcohol.

Yay for teaching pharmacology!

that was awesome! Yay for smart Amy.

I think I’ll be fine, since I don’t plan on slammin’ down shots as soon as the baby is born… just one ice cold beer or a glass of red wine here or there is all I ask for.

Yeah, I’m with ya Brooke. I don’t really miss our all night drinking sessions at the local lounge, but I DO miss the occasional glass of wine with dinner. It will be nice to do that again. Or even just a cold beer while we are grilling. I don’t plan to “pump and dump” from just a single drink. Although I may have to re-consider my strategy for my 30th, which is just 6 weeks after the baby gets here!
